Scholars and artists started drawing and writing poems on the fans to demonstrate their talent, and before long, fans became an integral part of the elite and learned.
Folding fans were introduced into China from Korea and Japan some 1,000 years ago. These fans were made from wafer thin paper, which was mounted on bamboo sticks. Chinese costumes, can also be worn during days that signify happiness and festivity, like the Halloween. Be a Chinese princess or a Chinese girl-warrior by wearing the Chinese dresses. Boys can be Bruce Lee, the Monkey King or be an animal in the Zodiac.
The Basics
The Chinese national costume is pretty and festive used on its own. However, for those who want to celebrate in their favorite Chinese story personalities, handy things around the house can be added to the basic Chinese costume.
1. Chinese Dress - Qi Pao
Qi Pao - This Chinese Dress is elegant and festive in its own right. Qi Pao means banner dress when translated. It usually has a high neck and slits on the sides. Designs can vary to flatter the woman's good features and hide the less than perfect features. Qi Pao for young girls can also be gotten in different colors and materials. For active young girls a Qi Pao dress-pants is a good idea.
Decide what impact you want to have when you walk into the room before you look at any Halloween costumes. Do you want heads to turn or do you want to look sexy, devilish, funny or impish? Once you have chosen your outfit, think of what shoes, hairstyles, accessories and makeups you'd like to go with.

Dressing up
It is a good idea to gather the following from around the house before starting to mix and match.
Getting sequined Chinese slippers or kung fu shoes from a nearby department store can be a good idea. It can be worn several times if you like wearing costumes for every event (or regularly, since they are comfortable). These can also be ordered online.
Mom's silk skirts in shiny fabrics, dad's silk robes may also be looted. If your family has wigs lying around the house, keep those. It may turn out useful for completing your desired look. Beautiful fabrics, scarves, bead necklaces, even table runners can be added to your collection of materials. Craft flowers, satin ribbons can also be added to the hair.
Chinese Princess
Do this with: girl's empire cut long dress/ other long dresses in plain design, in shiny fabric and plain design can also be used as a base garment when dressing up as a Chinese princess. An empire cut spaghetti strap will also do nicely. This can be topped over by a long robe/ blouse with butterfly sleeves(These tunic blouses were in fashion 3? 4? Years ago so mom may still have one in her closet.)
Hair can be fixed in a double bun, one on each side of the head, or let some of the hair flow. Beads can also be strung through the hair. Sashes can be tied around the waist, or can be used as hang down designs for the belt.
2. Lady White Snake
Similar to the Chinese Princess, although wear a white costume. May also bring a toy snake and put a pillow by the tummy to look pregnant.
3. Chinese Girl-Warrior
Like Mulan or Yu Shu Lien/ Jen Yu in Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon.
Do this with :
-Cheongsam dress-pants set
-Toy Sword or toy bows and arrows
-Kungfu shoes/ other shoes
Wear the pants set and shoes, sling over the toy weapons and youre done. Mom may also fix Warrior's hair into a neat hair style fit for battle.
4. Bruce Lee
Bruce Lee is one of my favorites to see. Strong, mysterious, and handsome, what girl wouldn’t swoon for this guy. A costume to look like him is also quite easy to recreate. The easiest version of him is to go topless with a pair of black Kung Fu pants and Kung Fu shoes (or if those are hard to get, black wrestling shoes and black sweat pants).
But some of us aren’t fortunate enough to live in a warm environment, so another option is Bruce Lee in a yellow and black sweat suit as he wore in Game of Death. Or you could go for the Kato look from his appearance in the TV show, Green Hornet
5. Monkey King
Do this with :

A month ago, we held a Community Conversation at Awakenings where over
50 participants focused on how we can come together as community from
a place of well-being and abundance to face the challenges and changes
ahead. Sacred Circle was one of the sponsors of that gathering, and
the report from that event is included below. A clear desire among
those gathered was to come together periodically to share resources,
our healing gifts, food and community.
Our first Abundance Gathering will be Sunday, December 21, at John's
Healing Oasis located at 537 SE Ash #42. Please spread the word!
We will designate separate spaces where we can enjoy food, engage in
art, share our healing gifts, and post requests and responses on a
networking board. There will also be a Potlatch Table where you can
leave food and clothing for others to take.
At 4pm, those who wish are invited to sit in Council together to
explore how we (individually and as community) deal with the huge
changes our society faces as we seek to live in greater harmony with
our fellow human beings and the planet.
Bring food, your artistic talent, your healing gifts, and an open mind.

COMMUNITY CONVERSATION SUMMARY: Thriving in Hard Times...
A week before Thanksgiving, about 50 people from several communities
met at Awakenings Wellness Center to discuss how we can all thrive in
a struggling economy. Our focus was on how we can come together from
a place of well-being and abundance to share our gifts and resources
to help each other through tough times.
We broke into 5 focus groups to discuss potential needs and assistance
in the areas of food, shelter, financial stability, health, and
general well-being. Each group was tasked with proposing 3
priorities to focus on. We asked group facilitators to email their
groups notes/priorities to us and have included their notes below.
There was definite interest among many participants to hold additional
gatherings to share food, engage in resource and skill sharing (in
artistic expression, healing, etc.) as well as continue to have
opportunities to sit in council and explore issues that arise in our
communities.
Several community members stepped up to help organize and host our
next gathering (thanks Carol Dilfer and John Johnson!)

FOOD RESOURCE GROUP
Facilitated by Brian Lundquist
1) Setting up a web site to list resources and needs (Brian has
already started looking into open source web software to help with
this),
2) Having community meals at each of our gatherings, beginning with
our next community meeting, and
3) Producing an instruction manual (web-based?) for organizing
community neighborhood blocks to produce, share and preserve food. (We
would love help gathering information on what other groups have
already done in organizing neighborhood communities to produce and
share food.)
FINANCIAL STABILITY GROUP
Facilitated by Michael Koch
1. Organize a Barter Bank Exchange to facilitate trades and
barters(Brian Lundquist says he knows something about how to make this
happen.)
2. Organize a marketing network for service providers to market
through people we know to people whom they know who may be financial
able and desirous of utilizing our healing, consulting, coaching, etc.
skills. (Angel has stepped up as a team leader to begin focalizing
energy on this.)
3. Develop a financial information and education resource. This
could provide instructive, how to information as well as make known
resources that are available to help people make better financial
decisions. (Rowdy is a team leader on this.)
4. Village Angels. Acknowledging the recent occurrences where the
community has risen up to provide financial, emotional and care giving
support for people who have had crisis or medical needs, the idea is
to develop a process for meeting these needs in the future. (Michael
Koch and Kate McNulty expressed interest in this.)
SHELTER GROUP
As was noted in all groups, we agreed that it would be useful to have
an inventory of needs and resources in the community; particular to
housing, spare rooms that are available for rent or willing to be
shared with those in need. If there were a push to create something
like a Craig's list for "our community" then members of the shelter
group would express interest in supporting that effort.
HEALTH AND WELL BEING
The Group on Health, Well Being found that our needs and gifts were
very complimentary. We spoke about coming out of our hibernation
states, coming into new communities, the development of incorporating
communities and how we branch out into new things which in turn
connects to new communities. We told and heard stories about the way
we come together in spiritual ways, in creative ways, in ways that
expand into different perspectives to hold beliefs beyond our old
paradigms. We found to express these things we would offer:
1.Our commitment to holding space once a month.
2.We would name ourselves a counsel, The Counsel of The Holy
Irreverent, was suggested.
3.We would gather to share our gifts, with a sign up sheet for those
who are facilitating the next month, me being the default
facilitator coordinator.
4.We would have a web site designed to catalog our modality, when we
were facilitating next, contact info. and which communities we are
involved in.
5.Space is on a community donation basis as is facilitation. With
generous offers from David Lee and Vidya, as well as Jas's place,
Awakenings.. This to Logistics...
6.raVen has been on IT and has many types of shamanic art to play with
where I can lend my experience to, creating a first counsel meeting.
Working with the shamanic arts that are designed to heal the Head and
Heart; thus beginning our creation in one of many tools and modalities
to encompass our Health and Well Being. This is a, do it from
different perspectives, approach that includes the Sacred, the
numerous, the Divine, the seen and unseen, to participate. Creating a
new counsel language encompassing new awareness.
