Whenever one stretches ones boundaries a bit and
goes into unfamiliar territory, there's always a whole
bunch of learning that goes along with that.
This topic of healing with touch is a new one for me. I've
been thinking on it quite a bit since I've scheduled an
interview this week with Brad Yates who specializes in
this form of healing .
TOUCH AND THE INTENTION BEHIND IT
This is a key notion at the center of EFT.
I always like to bring things back to the source. And so
lets consider our mammalian natures and the basic human
need for physical contact. Studies have shown that for both
humans and animals, if the young are raised with minimal
physical contact, there are serious, irreversible developmental
disabilities that manifest that can't be repaired in adulthood.
Consider the fact that human population is the highest ever
on our planet and seems to be increasing at an explosive rate,
yet in most technologically advanced societies, we find the
highest percentage of psychological illness and feelings of
loneliness and isolation. These problems are systemic and
complex.
HOW DO WE BEGIN TO HEAL OUR SOCIETY AND OURSELVES ?
Emotional Freedom Technique: I find the name interesting, and that
the word "freedom" was chosen. Although there is an emotional
and psychological focusing element to the practice (the physical
aspect of the treatment has to do with tapping in a certain sequence
on electro-magnetic meridians of the body) there seems something
almost reminiscent of the tribal healer in this very new and progressive
practice. This perspective might make some uncomfortable but I actually
like thinking about it this way.
WE ARE ALL HEALERS !
Modern medicine, by virtue of it's technology and specialization,
has taken away our sense of autonomy when it come to our bodies;
of necessity, it has separated us from the sense that we as individuals
can be masters of our own healing plan.
The medical system asks us to subordinate our decision making
about our health and bodies to professionals who "know better".
I don't mean this as a criticism. The ability to cure ourselves of
serious disease and injury is quite literally at times "out of our hands".
But does that have to mean all healing of ourselves is out of our hands ?
In a word, no. What the "primitive" tribal practitioner understood, and
indeed had to understand to do his craft, is that there is a powerful
potential for self healing in all of us. It has a lot to do with faith,
emotionally focus, setting intention... and the physical laying of
hands upon the body.
And, as we know, there are many progressive forms of holistic healing
these days that embody this system of belief: massage, acupuncture,
reiki... and EFT.
In a recent teleclass with Dr. Alex Lloyd, I learned that a lot of the finest
Universities and Medical Institutions in the land: Stanford, Vanderbilt,
Harvard... are all studying and giving scientific credence to the notion that
a large percentage; perhaps as many as 80 % of ALL illnesses orginate
from stress that gets locked into cellular networks in our bodies. That means
the more we can be resourceful and release stress and emotional pain at
its inception, the less likely we will get sick later.
I know a lot of your already have registered for this class. But if you
havn't, then... consider reclaiming your "inner healer" this week,
by being on the call with me and Brad Yates !
A PERSONAL TESTIMONIAL
A few weeks ago I had an old injury flair up. It was called
"water on the knee" some 20-odd years ago when I first
developed it as a result of running long distances on hard
surfaces. Some sort of tendon damage occurs that allows
fluids to build up behind the knee cap causing a lot of pain
when sitting for long periods or exercising like running or hiking.
And, I have discovered (unfortunately) while sleeping in one
position for too long !
From reading the book Brad Yate's co-authored: "Emotional
Freedom at Your Fingertips", I learned that its not just touching
that heals but the intention you set while touching.
I am not trained in EFT (Emotional Freedom Technique)
and, although I have practiced along with Brad on a previous
call, and with some of the exercises in the book, I am very much
looking forward to having it demonstrated once again on a live
call.
But, back to my knee. About a week ago after waking up for
several nights with searing pains arising from the offending limb,
I placed both hands on either side of my knee, and spoke these
loving, healing words to it: "I love my knee unconditionally no matter
how it troubles me, and I want it to heal". I noticed immediately both
heat and pain increased when I did this, but when I removed my hands
after a minute, the pain receded and was gone for hours !
Since then I have done this regularly and I have even begun feeling
changes within my knee joint as I do this, as if fluid is actually
circulating more quickly and draining away from the area of
inflammation. That's not to say that I have "cured" it. And, if it
gets worse, I may eventually seek a medical professional.
But of course I LOVE my knee and believe it WILL get better ...
(setting an intention there) !!
Love,
Gail
